How do I Write Wedding Invitation Wording?

There are many varieties for wedding invitation wording. You should word your invitations in the manner that best suits you as a couple, and the wedding day that you have planned. If you are having a casual wedding in your home or a park, casual invitation wording will be better suited to you. If you are having a large church wedding and black tie reception, formal invitation wording will suit your day.

Traditional weddings are hosted by the bride's parents, so the invitations convey the sentiment that the parents are giving away their daughter. Note: The traditional English spelling "honour" is used.

Mr. & Mrs. Sam Anderson
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Patricia Jean
to
Mr. Kenneth Phillips
on Saturday, August 14 th , 2007
four 'o clock in the afternoon
at the Hilltop Chapel
Springfield , MI

If the bride and groom are hosting a formal wedding, this wording is appropriate:

The honour of your presence
is requested at the marriage of
Miss Patricia Jean Anderson
to
Mr. Kenneth Phillips
on Saturday, August 14 th , 2007
four 'o clock in the afternoon
at the Hilltop Chapel
Springfield , MI

This wording can be used is the wedding is held at home or another non-church venue, and is hosted by the bride's parents:

Mr. & Mrs. Sam Anderson
request the pleasure of your company
at the marriage of their daughter
Patricia Jean
to
Mr. Kenneth Phillips
on Saturday, August 14 th , 2007
four 'o clock in the afternoon
at the Hilltop Chapel
Springfield , MI

If the formal wedding is hosted by the couple, and is somewhere other than a church:

The pleasure of your company
is requested at the marriage of
Miss Patricia Jean Anderson
to
Mr. Kenneth Phillips
on Saturday, August 14 th , 2007
four 'o clock in the afternoon
at the Springfield Park
Springfield, MI

For a casual wedding invitation hosted by the bride and groom, this will be more appropriate:

Patricia & Ken
invite you to share
in their joyous occasion.
The exchange of their wedding vows.
4 o'clock in the afternoon
August 14, 2007
At the Hilltop Country Club

If the couple has already wed:

Kenneth and Patricia Phillips
cordially invite you to join them
for a reception celebrating their recent marriage.
4 o'clock in the afternoon
Saturday, August 14, 2007
At the Hilltop Country Club
Springfield , OH

Writing your own wedding invitations

Wedding invitations will all have the same basic information. Formal or informal, make sure your invitations answer these questions:

1. For what is this an invitation?

Bill and Sally cordially invite you to celebrate the exchanging of their wedding vows.

You are invited to attend the union of Bill Smith and Sally Jones.

The honor of your presence is requested at the marriage of Ms. Sally Jones and Mr. William Smith.

Mr. & Mrs. John Jones request the honor of your presence at the wedding of their daughter Sally Marie to Mr. William Smith.

2. Where and When is the wedding?

June 30th, 2007 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon at Our Lady of Guadalupe

The ceremony will take place on June 30th at 3 o'clock in the afternoon at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Jones. 123 Main Street , Springfield CA.

3. Is there a reception? What else do guests need to know?

Reception to follow immediately. Dinner will be served, accompanied with a full bar.

Catered Reception to follow the ceremony

You know what's best for you as a couple. If you have planned a semi-casual wedding, wording that is a little more personal may be better suited to your needs. Write what represents you as a couple and the special day that you have planned.

How to Give Your Wording Visual Appeal

When you are laying out your wording, you might notice that sometimes sentences run together or cut off in awkward places. Your invitations will have visual appeal if each line breaks at a natural place, and there are spaces between paragraphs. It is easy to achieve this look with a few well placed returns and spaces. Compare the two samples below:

Correct:

Jane Smith
And
John Brown
invite you to share in their joyous occasion.
The exchange of their wedding vows.
3 o'clock in the afternoon
April 24, 2007
At the Hilltop Country Club.

Incorrect:

Jane Smith and
John Brown invite you
to share in their joyous occasion.
The exchange of their wedding
vows.
May 5,
2007 3 o'clock in the afternoon
